In the late hours of a Tuesday evening in Vicksburg, Mississippi, the life of 22-year-old Preston Wilson Jr. was tragically cut short. On July 18, 2023, the young Black man was walking near the intersection of Harrison and Cherry Streets when a black SUV approached. An occupant of the vehicle called out his name, issuing a chilling warning to 'watch himself' before driving away. Moments later, the same vehicle reappeared, and this time, gunfire erupted. Wilson was struck and attempted to flee, but collapsed a short distance away on Cherry Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Vicksburg Police Department, aided by video footage of the entire incident, launched an immediate investigation that quickly led to the identification and apprehension of multiple suspects. Within days, three local men were in custody: 23-year-old John Earl Wallace Jr., 34-year-old Patrick Ross-Hunter, and 35-year-old Zackery Bryant. The trio faced a string of serious charges, including murder, drive-by shooting, and multiple counts of aggravated assault. Wallace and Bryant also faced an additional charge for being felons in possession of a weapon. All three were arraigned in Vicksburg Municipal Court and bound over to the Warren County Grand Jury with bonds set at over $4 million each.
The investigation continued, and several months later, a fourth suspect was apprehended. In November 2023, 18-year-old Perrion Johnson was located and arrested in Austin, Texas. He was extradited back to Vicksburg to face charges of murder and drive-by shooting in connection with Wilson's death. As the case moved through the legal system, some of the accused opted to plead guilty. John Earl Wallace Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 30-year prison sentence. Perrion Johnson also entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. A murder charge against Zachary Bryant was dropped, and he pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, receiving a 10-year suspended sentence.
