In the spring of 2023, the life of 22-year-old Shemar Jashad Smith was tragically cut short in Vicksburg, Mississippi. On the evening of April 13th, the sound of gunfire prompted a dispatch of police officers to King's Drive in the Waltersville Estate area. A search of the vicinity led to the grim discovery of a male body. The victim was identified as Shemar J. Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting death of Shemar Smith led to the identification of a suspect, Markevius Sturdivant. Following his arrest, Sturdivant was charged in connection with Smith's murder. The legal proceedings culminated in Sturdivant pleading guilty to a charge of second-degree murder in Warren County Circuit Court.
During the sentencing, the court heard from both the defendant and the victim's family. Sturdivant offered an apology to Shemar Smith's family, expressing his deep regret for his actions and asking for their forgiveness and the court's mercy. In a poignant moment, Smith's grandmother addressed Sturdivant, stating that while she did not hate him, she hated what he did. She expressed the pain of having to visit her grandson's grave to speak with him and offered a prayer for Sturdivant. Ultimately, the judge sentenced Markevius Sturdivant to 40 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with 12 of those years to be served.
