In the early morning hours of October 11, 2024, the city of Greenwood, Mississippi, was shattered by an act of violence that would claim the life of 27-year-old Octavious Turner. Turner was a passenger in a vehicle traveling near the intersection of U.S. 82 and Sycamore Avenue when unknown assailants opened fire in a drive-by shooting. The brazen attack, which occurred around 8 a.m., left another passenger, 33-year-old Jonathan Shaffer, dead at the scene.
