In the late winter of 2021, a dispute between two individuals in Greenwood, Mississippi, ended in tragedy, claiming the life of 17-year-old Jeffrey Gillespie. On the evening of February 28, 2021, on the 200 block of Avenue H, a heated argument escalated to the point of gunfire. Responding to a call of shots fired, Greenwood police discovered Gillespie with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to Greenwood Leflore Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Jeffrey Gillespie succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of March 2, 2021. The Greenwood Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. Through evidence gathered at the scene and statements from witnesses, investigators were able to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting.
Later that same day, authorities arrested 24-year-old Clayton Lott, a resident of Greenwood, in connection with Gillespie's death. Lott was taken into custody and held at the Leflore County Jail. On March 4, 2021, Clayton Lott was formally charged with the murder of Jeffrey Gillespie, and his bond was set at $100,000.
The investigation revealed that the deadly encounter was not a random act but the culmination of a personal dispute between Lott and Gillespie. Witnesses reported that the two had been involved in an argument earlier that evening, which ultimately led to the fatal shooting. The case proceeded through the legal system, where Lott maintained his innocence, claiming the shooting was an act of self-defense. However, prosecutors presented evidence, including witness testimony and forensic analysis, that contradicted his claim. The trial concluded with a jury finding Clayton Lott guilty of second-degree murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the death of Jeffrey Gillespie.
