In the late morning of May 10, 2025, tragedy struck in Greenwood, Mississippi, when 20-year-old Dontavious Nellum, a Black male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Virden Drive. Emergency services responded, and Nellum was quickly transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Nellum succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:05 p.m. that evening.
His death marked the second homicide in Leflore County for the year 2025. The community was left shaken by the violence that claimed the life of the young man.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Leflore County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation into Nellum's death. However, as of May 15, 2025, no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide. Authorities had not released any information regarding potential suspects or a motive for the shooting, leaving a community searching for answers and a family grappling with a sudden and violent loss.
