In the summer of 2022, the life of 18-year-old Terry 'T.J.' Randle Jr., a promising male student-athlete from Greenwood, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. On July 23, while driving with his older brother, Jacori Randle, a normal afternoon turned into a scene of chaos and violence. Shortly after picking up a to-go order from a Waffle House on U.S.
82, another vehicle pulled alongside their Chevrolet Impala and unleashed a torrent of gunfire.
The brothers' car, riddled with bullets, veered off the road and came to a stop down an embankment of the Yazoo River. Both Terry and Jacori were struck multiple times in the hail of semi-automatic fire. In the immediate aftermath, authorities believe Jacori may have returned fire with a handgun. The two were airlifted to separate trauma centers, but Terry Randle Jr.'s injuries, including a gunshot wound to the brain, proved to be catastrophic. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away on July 25, 2022.
The motive behind the brazen midday shooting became a point of contention. The Greenwood police chief suggested that the incident was rooted in a long-standing rivalry between two local gangs. However, Terry's parents vehemently disputed this claim, asserting that their son was not involved in any gang activity. They described him as a talented athlete who excelled in football, baseball, and basketball at Amanda Elzy High School and was set to attend college on a full scholarship. His family was convinced that the shooting was a tragic case of mistaken identity, a retaliatory act fueled by false street rumors that wrongly implicated the Randle brothers in a fatal shooting that had occurred three weeks prior.
In the wake of the shooting, the investigation led to the arrest of one suspect, 22-year-old Cordarrius Harvey. However, he was later released from the Leflore County Jail pending further investigation. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding additional arrests, formal charges, or convictions directly related to the murder of Terry Randle Jr., leaving a void in the quest for justice for the young man whose future was so violently stolen.
