In the summer of 2015, the community of Greenwood, Mississippi, was shaken by a string of violence that claimed the life of 31-year-old Marquette Trevell Woods. On the evening of July 26th, Woods was fatally shot near the intersection of Ash Street and Avenue H, becoming one of two individuals killed in separate shootings within a 36-hour period in the city.
The Greenwood Police Department, under the guidance of Assistant Police Chief Marvin Hammond, swiftly initiated an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts quickly led to a person of interest, and shortly after the shooting, an arrest was made. Eighteen-year-old Dantrell Berry was taken into custody and subsequently charged with capital murder in connection with Woods' death.
Investigators believe the motive behind the fatal shooting was a robbery attempt. In addition to the capital murder charge, Berry also faced charges of possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon. Following his arrest, Berry was held on a $1 million bond as the legal process against him began to unfold.
