In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Greenwood, Mississippi, the life of 22-year-old Leonard Edwards was tragically cut short. On October 16, 2021, Edwards was fatally shot outside of his own home on Luther Drive. The violent act sent ripples of shock and grief through the community as the Leflore County Sheriff's Department began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the young man's demise.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and just three
days later, authorities had a suspect in custody. Jaekwon Huff, an 18-year-old from Leflore County, was arrested and charged with the murder of Leonard Edwards. What emerged from the investigation was a chilling narrative of betrayal. Reports indicated that Huff had visited Edwards under the guise of friendship, spending about an hour with him before the fatal encounter. In a brutal act of violence, Edwards was shot six times in the back. Following the shooting, Huff allegedly went to the home of friends and bragged about what he had done.
The legal process unfolded, and Jaekwon Huff's case went to trial. On May 9, 2024, a Leflore County jury found him guilty of second-degree murder. The conviction brought a measure of justice for Leonard Edwards and his grieving family. Huff was subsequently sentenced to 40 years in prison. An additional five years of post-release supervision were added to his sentence due to a gun enhancement, ensuring a lengthy period of accountability for the senseless act of violence that claimed a young man's life. The successful prosecution was the result of the collaborative efforts of the Leflore County Sheriff's Department, the state crime labs, medical examiners, and the diligent work of Assistant District Attorneys Stanley Alexander and Takiyah Perkins.
