On a cold February evening in Lansing, Michigan, the life of 18-year-old Makhi Urzuri Williams was tragically cut short. On February 5, 2023, while driving a Jeep in the 2100 block of Beal Avenue, Williams was struck by gunfire. First responders rushed to the scene following reports of the shooting and found him suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Sparrow Health System, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries.
Williams was a Black / African American male.
The investigation into the shooting led Lansing police to identify two young suspects, a 17-year-old and a 13-year-old. Both were subsequently arrested in connection with Williams' death. The Ingham County Prosecutor's Office later announced that the two teenagers would face serious charges for their alleged involvement in the fatal shooting.
The 17-year-old, identified as Keith Chapman, was charged as an adult with second-degree murder and felony firearm possession. The younger suspect, a 13-year-old whose name has not been publicly released due to his age, also faces charges of second-degree murder. It was determined that the 13-year-old would be prosecuted as a juvenile. However, authorities have stipulated that he could still be charged as an adult if he does not show progress in rehabilitation treatment. The community was left to grapple with the loss of a young life and the unsettling reality of youth involvement in such a violent act.
