Paris Lee Wells, a 33-year-old man, found his life cut tragically short on a Sunday night in September. Known for his big, infectious smile and a generous heart, Paris was a hard worker who dreamed of one day owning his own business. He was a man who loved his family deeply and was always willing to help someone in need. But on the evening of September 13, 2020, he became the victim of a fatal encounter outside the Red Roof Inn in Delta Township, near Lansing, Michigan.
That night, Eaton
County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the motel around 10:40 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Paris Lee Wells in the parking lot, suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but his injury proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence, leading authorities on a search for the person responsible for ending the young man's life.
The investigation into the homicide led police to 20-year-old Jimari Al-Hassan Jones of Lansing. Evidence presented during legal proceedings showed that Jones had planned to rob Wells. On the night of the murder, Jones drove to the Red Roof Inn, where he confronted Wells in the parking lot. During the robbery attempt, Jones shot Wells once before fleeing the scene. Just days after the shooting, on September 17, 2020, Jones was arrested and formally charged in connection with the crime.
Jimari Al-Hassan Jones faced a jury trial in Eaton County Circuit Court. After hearing the evidence, the jury found him guilty on all counts: felony murder, armed robbery, and felony firearm. The conviction for felony murder carried a mandatory sentence. Consequently, Jones was ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring that the man responsible for the senseless death of Paris Lee Wells would be held accountable for his actions.
