In the late afternoon of September 6, 2023, a sense of tragedy befell a neighborhood in Muskegon Heights, Michigan. Responding to reports of an unresponsive man, police arrived at a residence on Baker Street to find 21-year-old De'Marcus La'Trell Franklin in the front yard, suffering from gunshot wounds. First responders attempted to save his life, and he was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at approximately 3:23 p.m.
De'Marcus, a Black male, was a 2020 graduate of Muskegon High School where he had played basketball. He was also involved in youth football for Muskegon Heights. Known for his love of travel and foreign cars, particularly the Hyundai Genesis, he was remembered by his family as a loving individual who was 'just too grown for his time,' always taking care of those around him. At the time of his death, he was the father of a ten-month-old daughter.
The investigation into his death is ongoing, but as of now, no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The Muskegon Heights Police Department has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and has provided contact information for the department and the Silent Observer anonymous tip line. His family and the community continue to mourn their loss while they await answers and seek justice for his untimely death. A funeral service was held on September 16, 2023, at Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church in Muskegon Heights.
