A family birthday party on Detroit's east side turned into a place of mourning on the evening of March 19, 2024, when Sean Hayden, a 53-year-old Black male, was shot and killed. The gathering was being held at a residence in the 9200 block of Bishop Street, near I-94.
Hayden, a father and grandfather, was reportedly unarmed and seated at his cousin's birthday party when he was shot. Family members identified the shooter as Hayden's uncle.
According to some reports, the suspect was upset about the way Hayden was dancing with a woman at the party. His brothers, Abram and Cedric, described Sean as a joyful person who loved to make others laugh and said he was on disability, making him physically unable to be in a fight.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. Police later tracked his vehicle to a home on Lesure Street, near Outer Drive, and set up a barricade, believing he was inside. However, the suspect was not at that location. He later appeared at a local hospital, armed with a gun, where he caused a disturbance. Hospital security detained him, and he was subsequently arrested by Detroit police. The suspect is now in custody and was awaiting charges.
