In the summer of 2024, a tragedy unfolded in the north end of Kalamazoo, Michigan, forever altering the lives of one family. Charles Lee Weir, a 30-year-old man known affectionately as 'Chuck' to his friends and family, was fatally shot on July 24th at the Fox Ridge Apartments. The incident occurred in the early evening, around 6 p.m., in what was described as a crowded area of the apartment complex.
First responders found Weir with a gunshot wound and provided immediate medical aid before rushing him to a local hospital. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety quickly classified the shooting as a homicide, marking the city's fifth of the year.
The investigation into Charles Weir's death prompted an appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible. Authorities emphasized the crucial role community cooperation plays in solving such violent crimes and bringing justice to victims and their families. The police department acknowledged the persistent issue of gun violence in the community and expressed their commitment to utilizing all available resources to combat it. They also highlighted ongoing challenges with gang activity within the city.
In the weeks that followed the shooting, the investigation made significant progress. On July 31, detectives with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, assisted by the Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team, executed warrants at two residences in the city. This operation led to the arrest of 23-year-old DonQuay White of Kalamazoo. He was subsequently charged with open murder, felony firearm, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. White was arraigned and denied bond. The investigation did not stop there. In October, a second suspect, 21-year-old Deyonte Armstrong, was apprehended near Chicago by the U.S. Marshals. After waiving extradition, he was brought back to Kalamazoo to face charges. Armstrong was arraigned and also denied bond, facing multiple charges including homicide-open murder, two counts of felony weapons-firearm, and felony weapons-possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
