Anthony Charles Lyte Jr. was known to his family and friends as the life of the party, a young man whose presence could light up a room. Remembered for his warmth and spirit, the 19-year-old Male brought people together with his laughter and personality. To his family, he was a loving son, an awesome and cherished brother who was his sibling's best friend, a beloved cousin, and a dear nephew. Those who had the privilege of knowing Anthony felt his presence was a blessing, and the joy he shared left a permanent mark on their lives. His absence has created an emptiness that words cannot fully express, and he is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In the early morning hours of Saturday, October 31, 2026, Anthony’s life was tragically cut short. At approximately 2:30 a.m., officers from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) responded to reports of a shooting in the 400 block of West Michigan Avenue, near North Park Street in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Upon arrival, they found Anthony suffering from a serious gunshot wound. The officers immediately administered medical aid, but despite their efforts, Anthony succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.
The shooting was one of two separate homicides that shocked the Kalamazoo community that Halloween weekend. The death of another 19-year-old in a different incident the following day compounded the city's grief. Anthony's killing marked the 11th homicide in Kalamazoo that year, the ninth to involve a firearm. In response to the violent weekend, KDPS Captain Danielle Guilds of the Criminal Investigations Division released a statement. “Two homicides in one weekend are a sobering reminder of the impact gun violence has on our community,” she said. “These are not just incidents or statistics; they are lives lost, families forever changed, and a community left grieving. We cannot allow these acts of violence to become normalized.”
The investigation into Anthony’s murder was immediately launched by the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. As of early November 2026, authorities had not announced any arrests, identified any suspects, or publicly discussed a potential motive for the shooting. Investigators were working to determine if the people involved knew each other, but they stated that they did not believe the shooting was an act of retaliation. The case remains an active and open investigation.
In the wake of their devastating loss, Anthony's family organized a fundraiser to help cover the costs of his funeral and burial expenses, hoping to provide him with a beautiful and dignified homegoing. The family expressed their heartbreak and asked for the community's support, whether through donations or by keeping them in their thoughts and prayers. They shared that his memories will be treasured forever and that the love he gave will never be forgotten, concluding a tribute with "Forever loved. Forever remembered. Forever in our hearts. Forever 19."
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety continues to seek information from the public that could lead to a breakthrough in the case. They have urged anyone with knowledge about the shooting, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.
