On a Sunday afternoon in Detroit's historic Eastern Market, a dispute tragically escalated, leading to the death of 25-year-old Jalen Welch. The incident, which occurred on September 15, 2024, unfolded amidst the backdrop of a festive Lions tailgate, shattering the lively atmosphere with a single, fatal gunshot. Welch, a male resident of Detroit, was present near Shed 6 where a physical altercation had taken place among several men.
Although not directly involved in the initial fight, he became embroiled in a subsequent verbal argument with a group of approximately five men.
During the heated exchange, Welch, who was a licensed CPL holder, is reported to have drawn his pistol and approached a 40-year-old man in a threatening manner. This man, who was also a lawful CPL holder, reacted by drawing his own concealed weapon and firing a single shot. The bullet struck Welch in the head. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries the following day, on September 16, 2024.
Tragically, the single bullet that struck Welch also fatally wounded a bystander, 40-year-old Rayshawn Palmer. Palmer, who was reportedly acting as a peacemaker and attempting to de-escalate the argument, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 40-year-old shooter remained at the scene and was taken into police custody. However, after a thorough review of the evidence, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office determined that the shooter had acted in lawful self-defense. Citing Michigan law, which permits the use of deadly force when an individual reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm, Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that no charges would be filed against the shooter. The investigation concluded that Welch's actions of drawing his weapon and approaching the shooter in a threatening manner justified the use of deadly force in self-defense.
