In the early morning hours of March 18, 2022, the life of 14-year-old Aerris Mayberry was tragically cut short in a shooting at a Denver apartment complex. A female, Aerris was a freshman at Aurora Central High School, remembered by friends as a kind and innocent person with a vibrant personality. She had been spending the night at a friend's house during her spring break.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m.
in a neighborhood situated between the South Park Hill and North Aurora communities, near East 19th Avenue and Tamarac Street. When police responded to the scene, they found Aerris and a 16-year-old boy with gunshot wounds. Aerris was pronounced dead at the scene, while the teenage boy was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, Aerris's mother, Patricia Calhoun, made emotional pleas to the public for anyone with information to come forward. She expressed her devastation and confusion, stating that she had trusted her daughter to be at her friend's house. The family and friends of Aerris held a balloon release in her memory, with her favorite colors, blue and yellow, filling the sky as they demanded justice for the slain teenager.
