In the early evening of January 4, 2023, the quiet of a Hyattsville, Maryland apartment complex was disturbed by a grim discovery. In the parking lot of the complex, located on the 2600 block of Kirkwood Place, a man was found unresponsive. Authorities were called to the scene for a welfare check at approximately 5:50 p.m. and upon arrival, they found 39-year-old Melvin Mayorga Hernandez. Tragically, Mr.
Hernandez was pronounced deceased at the location.
The initial investigation into the death of the Salvadoran man, a husband and father of three, brought forth conflicting information. While the Prince George's County Police Department promptly began investigating his death as a homicide, stating he had been fatally shot, a GoFundMe page organized by his family initially mentioned he had suffered a heart attack. However, the fundraising page, created to help with funeral expenses and to transport his body back to his native El Salvador, also acknowledged that police had determined he was fatally shot.
The Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation into Melvin Mayorga Hernandez's death. At this time, detectives are still working to determine a motive for the shooting and to identify any potential suspects. In an effort to gather more information, a reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case. To date, there has been no public announcement regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the homicide. The case remains under active investigation as authorities appeal to the public for any details that may help bring clarity and justice for the family of Melvin Mayorga Hernandez.
