In the early evening of June 14, 2023, a tragedy unfolded in the Langley Park area of Hyattsville, Maryland, that cut short the life of 16-year-old Kevin Ruiz Campos. A tenth-grade student at Montgomery Blair High School, the young Hispanic male was in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 7900 block of Riggs Road when gunfire erupted at approximately 5:30 p.m.
Responding to reports of a shooting, Prince George's County police officers arrived to find Kevin suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The violence of that evening also left another individual, an adult male, wounded. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Investigators have stated that they do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence. In the days following the incident, the school community at Montgomery Blair High School mourned the loss of one of their own, with the principal acknowledging the profound sadness of losing a young person so unexpectedly. A support team was made available to provide counseling services to both students and staff members grappling with the tragic news.
In the wake of his death, Kevin Ruiz Campos's family organized a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral and memorial expenses. As of early July 2023, his shooting death was still considered an unsolved case, with law enforcement continuing their investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact detectives.
