In the quiet neighborhood of Adelphi, Maryland, the life of 37-year-old Ruben Garcia Ramos was violently cut short on the evening of March 22, 2018. Around 5:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Laguna Road following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Garcia Ramos suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The male victim resided in Adelphi, though initial reports incorrectly stated he was from Hyattsville.
The investigation into the homicide quickly revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence. Detectives determined that the fatal incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute. Less than two weeks later, authorities announced the arrests of two teenagers in connection with the murder. Freddy Mendez-Cruz, 19, of Takoma Park, and 16-year-old Christian Alvarado from Northeast Washington were taken into custody.
Both Mendez-Cruz and Alvarado faced serious charges, including first- and second-degree murder. Despite his age, Alvarado was charged as an adult. According to police, both teenagers confessed to their involvement in the shooting that led to the death of Ruben Garcia Ramos.
