In the spring of 2019, a violent encounter in Landover, Maryland, ended the life of a 23-year-old man named Tauron Williamson. On the evening of April 22nd, Williamson, a resident of Oxon Hill, and his 22-year-old accomplice, Tyron Wheeler from Northeast Washington, attempted to rob two men outside an apartment building in the 3200 block of 75th Avenue.
The situation escalated quickly when Wheeler shot one of the intended victims.
In a desperate act of self-defense, the second victim fought back, striking Williamson in the head with a rock. Both Williamson and the man who had been shot sustained critical injuries and were rushed to a local hospital. Two days later, on April 24th, Tauron Williamson succumbed to his injuries.
Initially, authorities believed Williamson had died from a gunshot wound. However, an autopsy later revealed that the fatal injury was, in fact, the blow to his head sustained during the altercation. The man who was shot by Wheeler remained in critical condition. Investigators determined that this was a robbery attempt and that the victims did not know their assailants.
Following the investigation, Tyron Wheeler was arrested and faced a series of charges, including attempted murder and armed robbery. He was held in jail without bond. The actions of the robbery victim who struck Williamson were deemed to be in self-defense.
