On the afternoon of February 20, 2020, the life of 44-year-old Brian Keith Woods of Silver Spring, Maryland, was tragically cut short. Prince George's County police were initially called to the 1000 block of Fairview Lane in the Chillum area for a report of a car crash around 3 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Woods outside of his vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound. His car had collided with a parked vehicle.
Woods was rushed to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Investigators quickly determined that the scene of the crash on Fairview Lane, near the border of Chillum and Takoma Park, was not where the shooting had occurred. The evidence led them to an apartment building in the 6800 block of Red Top Road, where they believe the fatal shooting took place. It is thought that after being shot, Woods fled in his car before crashing.
The investigation into the death of Brian Keith Woods led to the identification and arrest of two suspects who were known to him. Gary Phillips, 43, of Chillum, and Andre Steen, 26, of Takoma Park, were taken into custody in connection with the murder. The motive for the shooting was determined to be a dispute related to drugs.
Both Phillips and Steen were charged with second-degree murder and other related offenses. Following their arrest, they were held at the Department of Corrections on a no-bond status.
