Rudy Perez Gutierrez, a 24-year-old Hispanic man, was building a new life in the United States when he was killed. Originally from Guatemala, he had been in the country for only a few months and worked in construction. On the evening of Friday, April 14, 2023, he had just returned from his job when he and his brother were attacked near their apartment building in an unincorporated section of Hyattsville, Maryland.
Around 5:15 p.m., in the 2100 block of Guilford Road, an assailant
confronted the brothers during a robbery. The attacker opened fire, striking both men before fleeing. When Prince George’s County police officers arrived, they found Rudy Perez Gutierrez deceased at the scene. His brother was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. In the wake of the tragedy, his family raised money to send his body back to Guatemala.
The police investigation determined that the victims did not know their attacker. Within days of the shooting, detectives arrested 28-year-old Alex Quinteros of Takoma Park. He was charged with first and second-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery, and related offenses. The investigation continued, and in September 2023, authorities arrested a second suspect. Karen Andrade, a 30-year-old woman from Silver Spring, was also charged with first and second-degree murder and related charges. Both were taken into the custody of the Department of Corrections and held without bond.
The case progressed through the legal system, and in March 2024, a defendant pleaded guilty to murder in connection with the fatal shooting.
