In the summer of 2020, a young man's life was cut short in a violent encounter in Landover, Maryland. Maurice Magruder Jr., a 20-year-old male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 23rd. The incident occurred around 1:50 p.m. in the 3100 block of Duvall Ridge Road. When officers from the Prince George's County Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered Magruder outside, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect who was known to the victim. Homicide detectives were able to identify 22-year-old Ricardo Figueroa, Jr. of Landover as the individual allegedly responsible for Magruder's death. According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting stemmed from a dispute that escalated into a physical altercation between the two men. It was during this fight that Figueroa allegedly shot Magruder. The police did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence.

Within a couple of days of the fatal shooting, Ricardo Figueroa, Jr. was taken into custody by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, along with other related charges in connection with the death of Maurice Magruder Jr. Following his arrest, a commissioner ordered that he be held at the Department of Corrections without bond.
