In the late afternoon of August 18, 2022, a verbal dispute inside the bustling food court of the Mall at Prince George's in Hyattsville, Maryland, tragically escalated, ending the life of 20-year-old Darrion Herring. The Hyattsville resident was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities who responded to the shooting at approximately 4 p.m.
Police quickly stated that they did not believe the shooting was a random act.
The investigation into Herring's death led Prince George's County police to identify 33-year-old Stephon Edward Jones of Washington, D.C., as the primary suspect. According to the preliminary investigation, the fatal encounter stemmed from an argument between Jones and Herring. Following the incident, authorities released images of the suspect to the public, seeking assistance in his location and offering a substantial reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
After a period of searching, which involved the U.S. Marshals Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, Stephon Edward Jones was taken into custody in Washington, D.C., in early October 2022. He was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as other related charges, in connection with the death of Darrion Herring. Following his arrest, Jones was held in custody awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face the charges against him.
