On a summer evening in Prince George's County, Maryland, the life of 24-year-old Nijah Johnson was tragically cut short. On July 30, 2021, Johnson, a Black male from Upper Marlboro, was outside with two women in the 1900 block of Village Green Drive in Landover. In a sudden act of violence, a car drove by and an occupant opened fire on the group.
The gunfire resulted in the death of Johnson and 65-year-old Hannah Woods of Seat Pleasant.
Woods was pronounced dead at the scene, while Johnson was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A third woman who was shot sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The shooting was one of several violent incidents that occurred in Prince George's County over that weekend, leaving the community in a state of fear and prompting calls for an end to the violence.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, the Prince George's County Police Department launched an investigation into the homicides of Nijah Johnson and Hannah Woods.
