In the quiet neighborhood of Hyattsville, Maryland, the life of 29-year-old James Albert Haywood was tragically cut short on the evening of June 15, 2016. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 5:15 p.m., police officers arrived at Haywood's home in the 3500 block of 55th Avenue to a grim scene. Inside, they discovered Haywood suffering from a gunshot wound.
Another individual present in the home at the time of the incident was unharmed.
Emergency services transported Haywood to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them shortly after arrival. The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 35-year-old Jason Timothy Herring of Laurel. Authorities believed the deadly encounter was not a random act of violence but rather the culmination of an ongoing dispute between the two men.
The day following the fatal shooting, the Prince George's County Police Homicide Unit announced the arrest of Jason Timothy Herring in connection with Haywood's death. Herring was taken into custody and faced a series of serious charges, including first and second-degree murder, as well as attempted murder. He was subsequently held by the Department of Corrections as the investigation continued and the legal process began to unfold.
