In the early hours of March 6, 2023, the life of 31-year-old Jarell Thompson of Washington, D.C., was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in the unincorporated section of Hyattsville, Maryland. Responding to a call at approximately 12:15 a.m. in the 3500 block of 52nd Avenue, Prince George's County police officers discovered Thompson inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, details surrounding the motive and potential suspects were scarce, prompting detectives to launch a homicide investigation and offer a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment. The investigation revealed that the shooting occurred during a robbery and that the individuals involved were not strangers to Thompson.
Months later, a significant breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of three men. Kenneth Gails, 30, of Riverdale, Marcus Chapman, 33, of Hyattsville, and Josue Vasques, 27, of Hyattsville, were taken into custody. All three face serious charges, including first and second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Following their arrest, they were held at the county jail without bond.
