In the late afternoon heat of the Fourth of July, a dispute escalated into fatal violence that claimed the life of 33-year-old Demarco Robinson of Lanham, Maryland. On that Tuesday in 2017, at approximately 3:40 p.m., Robinson was a passenger in a car near a liquor store in the 7300 block of Landover Road when an argument erupted with individuals in a nearby van.
The verbal altercation quickly turned deadly as shots were fired into the car Robinson occupied.
Suffering from a gunshot wound, Robinson was privately transported to a local hospital. Despite the swift medical attention he received, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Another person in the car with Robinson was also struck by the gunfire but sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The incident was one of three fatal shootings that occurred within a 24-hour period in Prince George's County, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
Investigators quickly gathered details about the altercation and the suspect vehicle, a van. Two days later, a breakthrough in the case came when a Prince George's County police officer on patrol noticed a van matching the description being towed on St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills. The officer's sharp observation led to the identification of the van's owner through the tow truck driver.
The investigation swiftly pointed to 24-year-old Thomas Tyrone Sanders of Landover as the prime suspect. On the Friday following the shooting, police arrested Sanders. He was subsequently charged with first- and second-degree murder in connection with the death of Demarco Robinson, bringing a swift, though somber, development to a case that had begun with a roadside argument and ended in a tragic loss of life.
