In the late morning of June 27, 2023, the quiet of the unit block of South Marlyn Avenue in Essex, Maryland, was shattered by violence. It was there, at approximately 11:30 a.m., that 26-year-old Adrian Hutton, a Black/African American male, was discovered suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. First responders arrived at the scene to find Hutton grievously injured. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them the following day.
The Baltimore County Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into the tragic shooting. For weeks, detectives worked to piece together the events that led to Hutton's untimely death, appealing to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. Their investigation ultimately led them to a suspect.
On July 17, 2023, a significant development was made in the case with the arrest of 46-year-old Matthew Wright. Wright was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Adrian Hutton. Following his arrest, Wright was held at the Baltimore County Detention Center without bond. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed.
