In the early hours of May 27, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn quiet on the 2700 block of West Fairmont Avenue in Baltimore's Shipley Hill neighborhood. Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 12:40 a.m., Southwest District patrol officers discovered 41-year-old Corey Robinson suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds to his neck, torso, and leg.
Paramedics rushed him to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead about 40 minutes after his arrival.
Corey Robinson was known in his community as a creative fruit design artist. The investigation into his death suggested that the fatal encounter began when Robinson confronted a man for allegedly attempting to steal from his car in his neighborhood. This confrontation escalated tragically, ending Robinson's life and launching a homicide investigation.
Weeks after the shooting, on August 15, a suspect named JaJuan Smith, 34, turned himself in to the Baltimore Police Department headquarters. Warrant apprehension detectives arrested him without incident, and he was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, and firearm possession with a prior disqualifying felony conviction.
Despite the arrest and the initial charges, the path to justice took an unexpected turn. The prosecution offered Smith a plea deal of 40 years, with all but 25 suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation. However, the case against JaJuan Smith ultimately collapsed. On May 12, 2025, during a hearing before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland, the prosecution was forced to dismiss all charges against Smith. The decision was made because they were unable to locate key eyewitnesses crucial for the trial to proceed.
