Summary based on 6 sources
In the summer of 2021, the life of 41-year-old Santiago “Tiger” Loyal was tragically cut short on a street in East Baltimore. On August 11, the Black / African American man was discovered deceased in front of a vacant home located in the 1200 block of Cliftview Avenue. The nature of his death immediately sparked a thorough investigation by local law enforcement.

It was determined that Loyal had been fatally shot. As detectives pieced together the events of that fateful day, surveillance footage and witness accounts pointed towards a primary suspect: 51-year-old Shawn Brewton. Investigators alleged that Brewton deliberately shot Loyal. The investigation further revealed a grim connection to another act of violence that same night. Brewton was also implicated in the murder of 38-year-old William Smith, which occurred just 45 minutes after Loyal's death, suggesting a brief but brutal spree of violence.

Based on the evidence gathered, which included video footage and eyewitness statements placing him at both crime scenes, Shawn Brewton was arrested and charged with the murders of both Santiago Loyal and William Smith. Another man, Michael Corprew, was identified as a co-defendant, with authorities alleging he was in a vehicle with Brewton as they traveled from the scene of Loyal's killing to the location where Smith was murdered.

The legal process against Brewton commenced. In a separate trial, he was found guilty of the second-degree murder of William Smith on November 17, 2023. The trial for the murder of Santiago Loyal began with opening statements on April 2, 2024. During these proceedings, the prosecution detailed that Loyal had been shot in the face and chest. Ballistic evidence suggested that a bullet found at the scene of Smith's murder was fired from the same weapon used to kill Loyal. Cell phone evidence was also presented to demonstrate the movement of Brewton and Corprew between the two murder locations.
