On a summer afternoon, tragedy struck in District Heights, Maryland, forever altering the lives of several families. On June 10, 2024, 19-year-old Anthony Ward III was fatally shot in the 5400 block of Marlboro Pike. The incident, which occurred around 3:15 p.m. outside a convenience store, also left two other individuals, a man and a woman, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
First responders arrived at the chaotic scene and attempted to render aid, but Ward was pronounced dead at the location.
The investigation into the shooting suggested that the attack was not a random act of violence. Surveillance footage captured four individuals exiting a vehicle and opening fire. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the suspects and the victims. This led the Prince George's County Police Department's Homicide Unit on an intensive search for those responsible for the brazen daylight shooting that claimed a young life and endangered others.
Months later, in December 2024, a significant breakthrough in the case was announced with the arrest of four suspects. The individuals taken into custody were 19-year-old Michael Zion Jones, 19-year-old Jacorey White, a 17-year-old from Fort Washington, and a 16-year-old from Hyattsville. In a decisive move by the justice system, it was determined that both teenage suspects would be charged as adults, facing the same serious charges as their older alleged accomplices. All four have been charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as attempted first and second-degree murder, in connection with the shooting. Following their arrests, they were taken into the custody of the Department of Corrections and are being held on a no-bond status.
