In the late afternoon of August 18, 2024, a dispute in a Temple Hills, Maryland parking lot tragically escalated, ending the life of 43-year-old Antonio Tony C. Bell. A Black male from Oxon Hill, Bell was found by Prince George's County police officers in the 3300 block of Huntley Square Drive suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man was also found at the location with a gunshot wound, though his injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, and a manhunt ensued. Later that same night, the Prince George's County Police Department's Fugitive Unit located and apprehended 18-year-old Izayah Matthews of Temple Hills. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute between Matthews and Bell. Matthews was subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as other related charges.
Law enforcement has indicated that they believe Matthews acted alone in this violent act.
In the wake of this tragedy, Antonio Bell's family expressed their profound grief and devastation over his sudden and senseless death. A fundraising effort was initiated to help cover the unexpected funeral expenses, describing him as a man who loved his family fiercely and would be endlessly missed. The community was left to mourn his loss and grapple with the impact of gun violence in their neighborhood, as vigils and memorials were held to honor his memory. The legal proceedings against Izayah Matthews are ongoing.
