On what was supposed to be a regular morning, 23-year-old Xavier Matthews, a male resident of Temple Hills, Maryland, found himself in a situation that would tragically end his life. On June 28, 2023, Prince George's County Police were called to a Super 8 motel in Camp Springs around 7 a.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered two men with gunshot wounds. One of them was Xavier Matthews, who was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after. The other man, identified as 26-year-old Karon Moore of Washington, D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly revealed a sinister plot of robbery that had gone horribly wrong. It was determined that Matthews and a woman named Keymonte Day, 24, from Washington, D.C., were together in a room at the motel. Investigators believe that Day had conspired with several men to rob Matthews.
Surveillance footage from the motel captured Day, who had rented the room, placing a room key card behind the tire of Matthews' Porsche SUV. A short while later, a blue Infiniti arrived, and an individual retrieved the key. At approximately 6:55 a.m., three men, including Moore and another suspect identified as 22-year-old Christopher Jamar Jenkins of Capitol Heights, exited the Infiniti and entered the motel room armed with firearms.
Inside the room, an attempt to rob Matthews escalated into a violent confrontation. Gunfire erupted, resulting in both Matthews and one of the alleged robbers, Karon Moore, being shot. In the aftermath, the surviving suspects, along with Keymonte Day, fled the scene together. The subsequent police investigation led to the swift arrest of Day and Jenkins just a day after the deadly incident. They were both charged with first-degree murder for their roles in the tragic events that unfolded.
The legal process that followed brought some measure of justice for Xavier Matthews and his family. In May 2025, Christopher Jamar Jenkins was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder, in addition to conspiracy and firearms charges. Subsequently, in September 2025, Jenkins was sentenced to 80 years in prison for his involvement in the deaths of both Xavier Matthews and his accomplice, Karon Moore. The case highlighted a preventable tragedy, as described by the State's Attorney, which stemmed from a planned robbery. The authorities continue to investigate to identify any other individuals who may have been involved in the fatal shooting.
