In the early hours of a December morning in Temple Hills, Maryland, a dispute between acquaintances escalated to a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 25-year-old Brian Crayton Jr. Just before 2:15 a.m. on December 1, 2018, police responded to a report of a shooting in the 4000 block of Birchtree Lane. Upon arrival, they discovered Crayton outside, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the Waldorf man, who was a Black male, quickly focused on an ongoing conflict. Detectives determined that the shooting was not a random act. Their investigation led them to identify 23-year-old Donnell Cato, of Temple Hills, as the suspect. The altercation reportedly began after an argument, which led to Crayton and others arriving at the location.
An unarmed Crayton was shot in the chest by Cato during a hostile confrontation.
In April 2019, several months after the fatal shooting, Donnell Cato was arrested. He was taken into custody in Washington, D.C., awaiting extradition to Prince George's County to face charges. Cato was charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as other related charges in connection with the death of Brian Crayton Jr.
