On a cold February day in 2017, the life of James Christopher III, a 45-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short in his Kansas City, Kansas home. On February 7th, a relative discovered the bodies of Christopher and his 28-year-old cousin, Alfred Vine Jr., inside Christopher's house located in the 400 block of Greeley Avenue. Both men had been shot multiple times in what police would rule a double homicide.
James, known affectionately by friends and family as "J
Rock," was a respected figure in his community. He was a rap artist who dedicated his time to mentoring and encouraging younger aspiring rappers. Beyond his music, Christopher was known for his generosity and his work with young people in a youth football program, remembered by those who knew him as a man who would give the shirt off his back. The news of his violent death sent ripples of grief and shock through the community that held him in high regard.
In the immediate aftermath of the discovery, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the killings.
