In the late afternoon of May 18, 2017, a tragic series of events unfolded in Temple Hills, Maryland, culminating in the death of 24-year-old Tavon Todd. The incident began in the parking lot of a business located in the 6300 block of Allentown Road. It was there that another 24-year-old man, Bernard Gibson III of Temple Hills, was captured on surveillance video firing shots at Todd's vehicle as he attempted to flee the scene.
Following the shooting, a pursuit ensued with Gibson chasing after Todd's car. The chase ended tragically in the 5400 block of Temple Hills Road when Todd's vehicle crashed into a county school bus. Emergency services responded to the scene shortly before 5:00 p.m., where they found Todd, the sole occupant of the car, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, there were no students on the school bus at the time of the collision.
Initially, on June 2, 2017, Bernard Gibson III was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

The cause of death was ruled to be multiple injuries sustained in the car crash, which was a direct result of him fleeing the gunfire.
