On January 17, 2023, 39-year-old Casey Alisha Hamblin-Moss was fatally shot in Batavia Township, Ohio. The incident stemmed from a drug transaction dispute. According to the Clermont County Sheriff's Office, Hamblin-Moss and her boyfriend purchased drugs from Ryan B. Vest at a Wendy's near Buxton Road. Believing he had been shorted money, Vest demanded the return of the drugs. When the couple did not comply, Vest pursued them in his vehicle.
Accompanied by 22-year-old Jaydon Maurice Pierce, Vest chased the couple through the area. Upon catching up to them on Bach Grove Court, Pierce fired a single gunshot from the passenger seat, striking Hamblin-Moss in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, Vest was apprehended during a traffic stop in Union Township and charged with aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, and tampering with evidence. Pierce turned himself in to authorities on January 26, 2023, and faced charges of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. In January 2024, Pierce pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, attempted aggravated murder, and trafficking in heroin, receiving a prison sentence of 25 to 30 years. The following month, Vest pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, attempted aggravated murder, and trafficking in heroin, resulting in a 15- to 18-year prison sentence.
Hamblin-Moss was survived by her children, Brooklyn and Willow Moss, and Charlie Herbert, as well as her mother, Cheryl Hamblin, and siblings, Robin Hamblin, Missy Fields, and Julie Hamblin. A memorial gathering was held on January 28, 2023, at E.C. Nurre Funeral Home in Amelia, Ohio, to honor her memory.
