On February 13, 2024, a tragic incident occurred near Xavier University's campus in Cincinnati, Ohio, resulting in the death of 25-year-old De'miko Nelson. The shooting took place around 10 p.m. near the intersection of Dana and Idlewild avenues in the Evanston neighborhood. Nelson was shot multiple times in the chest and was found at the entrance of Listermann Brewing Company. He was rushed to UC Medical Center but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The incident was described as a double shooting, with another man shot in the cheek. The second victim was expected to recover from his injuries. Nelson's car was found with several bullet holes, and police discovered a trail of blood leading from the vehicle to the brewery where he was found.
In the days following the shooting, law enforcement made significant progress in the investigation. On February 24, 2024, police arrested Keshawn Browner, 22, and a 17-year-old male in connection with Nelson's death. Shortly after, on February 28, 2024, a fourth suspect was apprehended for what authorities described as a fatal "ambush" shooting.
Additional arrests included Kemonte Foster, 21, who was charged in relation to Nelson's death. The police investigation revealed that multiple individuals were allegedly involved in the shooting, suggesting a coordinated attack.
Nelson's family remembered him fondly, with his uncle Antonio Dorsey recalling that he used to call him "Bob the Builder" after his favorite cartoon. Nelson had served in the Army and was preparing to start coaching basketball at the time of his death. The family set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses.
The community was shaken by the incident, with local residents expressing their concern and sadness. The shooting highlighted ongoing issues with gun violence in the area, prompting calls for increased safety measures and community action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
