In the summer of 2017, the life of 15-year-old La'Corey Thomas was cut tragically short. On the afternoon of Friday, June 2nd, violence erupted in Birmingham, Alabama's Smithfield community, and the young man was fatally wounded in what was reported as a shootout. Emergency services responded to the chaotic scene, but despite their efforts, La'Corey Thomas succumbed to his injuries. He was a male, and at the time of his death, he was just a teenager with his whole life ahead of him.
