Roshad Broadus was a 30-year-old Black man from Columbus, Ohio, who was remembered by his family as a beloved son, brother, nephew, and uncle. He was a working co-parent who had recently reconnected with his faith. His family said he was a helping hand to anyone in need and took tremendous pride in learning about his family’s history. According to a family tribute, he was defending and protecting his family at his home when he was attacked.
On the night of Saturday, November 2, 2024,
just before 11 p.m., an altercation occurred on the 1600 block of Oak Street in the Franklin Park neighborhood. Reports state the dispute was between Broadus and his neighbor, Donnye Abrams, and concerned a dog on the front porch. During the confrontation, Abrams allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Broadus. Responding Columbus police officers found Broadus lying in his doorway with what was described in court documents as a "catastrophic" gunshot wound to the head.
Medics rushed Broadus to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries three days later and was pronounced dead on November 5, 2024.
Police arrested Abrams, then 23, at the scene of the shooting. According to court documents, Abrams admitted to the shooting. He was initially charged with felonious assault and held on a $1 million bond. After Roshad Broadus died, the charge against Abrams was upgraded to murder. The case proceeded to trial, and in February 2026, a Franklin County jury found Donnye Abrams not guilty in the fatal shooting.
Following the acquittal, no one has been convicted in the death of Roshad Broadus. As of February 2026, his case remains unsolved.
