On July 19, 2017, 19-year-old Abdul Cadir Ali Yussef, a male of Somali descent, was tragically killed during a home invasion in Columbus, Ohio. Yussef was one of two men who lost their lives in the incident, which occurred at an apartment building on Wedgewood Drive in southwest Columbus. The other victim, 26-year-old Mohamed Ali Mohamed, succumbed to his injuries later that day at Mount Carmel West Hospital.
The home invasion began around 4 p.m.
the previous day, when at least four armed suspects forced their way into the apartment and took the victims hostage. The suspects held the victims hostage for approximately 10 hours, threatening them with being shot. During this time, the suspects pistol-whipped two of the victims and opened fire, hitting Yussef and Mohamed. A fifth victim, a woman living in the apartment below, was also injured by a bullet that traveled through the floor.
Columbus Police identified two suspects, 35-year-old Desmond Webster and 22-year-old Julius Anderson, and issued aggravated murder warrants for their arrests. Both suspects were considered armed and dangerous. Three other suspects were arrested and charged in connection with the incident: Joshua B. Radabaugh, Aden Abdikadir Hassan, and Omar Mohamed Omar. However, two additional suspects remained at large.
The investigation revealed that a vehicle believed to have been taken from the scene by one of the suspects was found incinerated and abandoned on Rosemont Avenue hours after the shootings. The motive behind the home invasion and shootings remains unclear.
The tragic loss of Abdul Cadir Ali Yussef and Mohamed Ali Mohamed highlighted the dangers of home invasions and the importance of community vigilance. The Columbus Police Homicide Unit and Central Ohio Crime Stoppers continued to seek information from the public to bring the remaining suspects to justice.
