On May 2, 2024, at approximately 3:01 p.m., Columbus Police officers responded to a reported shooting in the 700 block of Reinhard Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered 20-year-old Najaa Ellman suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:08 p.m.
Witnesses reported that Ellman was with friends when an argument ensued with 19-year-old Lawuan Williams, who was driving a 2020 gray Nissan Altima.
During the altercation, Williams allegedly produced a handgun and shot Ellman, resulting in his death. Williams then fled the scene in the Nissan, while an unidentified individual fired shots at him as he departed.
Shortly after the incident, officers located the Nissan near the intersection of East Livingston Avenue and Kenilworth Place. Williams was found hiding in a nearby residence and surrendered to police without further incident. He was subsequently charged with murder and held in the Franklin County Corrections Center. During a court appearance, Williams's bond was set at $1 million.
Authorities continue to seek information regarding individuals who were with Ellman prior to the shooting and the person who fired at Williams as he fled.
