Demontae Johnson, a 20-year-old Black man from Columbus, Ohio, was fatally wounded in a shooting on the city's southeast side in late July 2026. Although the shooting occurred on July 26, online police and news records state that Johnson remained alive for several days afterward and was pronounced dead on July 30, 2026. Columbus police classified the case as a homicide after his death.
At approximately 10:55 p.m. on July 26, Columbus Division of Police officers were dispatched to the 2500 block of Petzinger Road near U.S. Route 33 after receiving a report of gunfire. The location was identified in news coverage as the Leader Square Shopping Center. When officers arrived, they found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel transported him to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. Police described his injuries as catastrophic, prompting homicide detectives to become involved even before his death.
Investigators identified Treshon J. Corbin of Reynoldsburg as the suspected shooter. According to Franklin County Municipal Court records described by local news outlets, a woman who was with Corbin was detained at the scene and later interviewed by detectives. She reportedly told investigators that she and Corbin had driven to a store to make a purchase. While she remained in the passenger seat, Corbin allegedly opened the driver's-side door, stepped partially or fully outside the vehicle and began firing. Authorities alleged that the violence was connected to an ongoing feud between families.
After the shooting, Corbin allegedly drove away from the area with the witness still inside the vehicle. Court documents reported by local media state that he later drove to the 700 block of Champion Avenue, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. The witness subsequently returned to the shooting scene and provided information to investigators. Police initially obtained a warrant charging Corbin with felonious assault because Johnson was still alive but critically injured.
Johnson was pronounced dead at Grant Medical Center at approximately 4:46 p.m. on July 30. Following his death, investigators upgraded the criminal case against Corbin from felonious assault to murder. Columbus police publicly described Corbin as armed and dangerous while he remained at large and asked anyone who knew his location to contact homicide detectives.
Corbin was subsequently taken into custody. Franklin County jail information reported by local media showed that he was booked on Monday, August 3, 2026, on the murder charge. During his first court proceedings, a Franklin County judge set his bond at $2 million. As of the latest available reporting before August 11, Corbin remained charged with murder and was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on August 12, 2026.
