In the early morning hours of March 25, 2023, the life of 32-year-old Hispanic male Omar Reyes Garcia was cut short in a sudden act of violence inside the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Stateline, Nevada. Reyes Garcia, a resident of South Lake Tahoe, had been at the casino's center bar where he met 24-year-old Edgar Julian Delgado. The two men spent several hours together, and surveillance footage even captured them comparing tattoos.
What began as a seemingly amicable encounter took a
tragic turn after an argument broke out between them. Delgado then pulled out a handgun and shot Reyes Garcia in the head. The initial reports of an active shooter prompted a massive law enforcement response, with over 50 officers from various agencies descending on the casino. The casino floor was shut down and a section of U.S. 50 was closed as authorities searched for the assailant. Reyes Garcia was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Delgado and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Savannah Racquel Tautaupale, hastily fled the scene in a Toyota 4Runner. Casino security was able to provide a description of the suspects and their vehicle to law enforcement. A short time later, El Dorado County sheriff's deputies located and stopped the vehicle on U.S. 50 near the Sierra-at-Tahoe resort. Delgado was arrested on suspicion of open murder, and Tautaupale was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Edgar Julian Delgado, a resident of Santa Cruz, initially pleaded not guilty. However, he later changed his plea to guilty of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon enhancement. An investigator testified that while Delgado did not deny the shooting, he would not provide a reason for his actions. In June 2024, Delgado was sentenced to a maximum of 55 years in prison and will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 22 years.
