In a North Las Vegas home on April 10, 2017, a family dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving 63-year-old Black / African American male Darrell Timothy Reed dead from a gunshot wound. The events of that day unfolded at a residence on Dilly Circle, where an argument between Darrell and his sister, Christie Reed, turned violent.
The conflict reportedly began over a dog, which Darrell had allegedly stabbed in the mouth.
Both siblings had been drinking, and the initial confrontation led to Darrell leaving the house. Upon his return, the argument reignited. Fearing for her safety due to what she described as past instances of physical abuse, Christie Reed, who was 52 at the time, retrieved a. 22 caliber firearm.
According to Christie's account to the police, the gun discharged accidentally. She claimed that while holding the weapon and leaning on a mop, she slipped, causing the firearm to go off. The single bullet struck her brother in the right thigh. After the shooting, Christie called 911 to report that she had accidentally shot her brother. Before the arrival of emergency services, she also contacted family members and attempted to move her brother to the front of the house to get him help. However, Darrell Timothy Reed succumbed to his injury before medical assistance could arrive.
Despite Christie Reed's claim of an accidental shooting, the Clark County Coroner's Office ruled her brother's death a homicide, with the cause of death being a gunshot wound to the right thigh. Following an investigation into the incident, North Las Vegas police arrested Christie Reed. She was subsequently charged with one count of murder with a deadly weapon in connection with the death of her brother.
