On a Memorial Day afternoon in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, a confrontation turned fatal for 18-year-old Tycorian Jaquan Estes, a Black/African American male. On May 29, 2023, what was supposed to be a prearranged exchange of firearms between teenagers devolved into a deadly encounter. The incident unfolded around 1 p.m. in an alley in the 3300 block of North Grimes Avenue, where Estes met with 17-year-old Anthony Guerrero and a 14-year-old accomplice.
An argument broke out between Estes and
Guerrero during the attempted gun swap. The disagreement escalated physically when Estes reportedly tried to take the gun from Guerrero by putting him in a headlock. In the ensuing struggle, Guerrero allegedly fired two shots, striking Estes in the neck and stomach. As Estes lay wounded on the ground, Guerrero and the 14-year-old fled the scene in a silver SUV. Two women who heard the gunshots rushed to Estes's aid, applying pressure to his neck wound until emergency services arrived. First responders found Estes without a pulse and not breathing and immediately began to provide medical assistance.
Estes was rushed to North Memorial Health Hospital, where he fought for his life for several days. He had suffered a severe anoxic brain injury due to prolonged CPR and massive blood loss, in addition to spinal fractures. Despite medical efforts, Tycorian Jaquan Estes succumbed to his injuries and died on June 1, 2023. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed his death was a homicide resulting from multiple gunshot wounds.
Meanwhile, police officers who had observed a small silver SUV speeding and running a red light shortly after the shooting initiated a pursuit. The vehicle eventually stopped on its own on Highway 100, and the two occupants, Anthony Guerrero and his 14-year-old passenger, were arrested. A search of the vehicle uncovered a 9-millimeter handgun in the glovebox, an extended magazine, and other ammunition. A spent 9mm shell casing was also discovered in the pocket of Guerrero's sweatshirt. During questioning, the 14-year-old accomplice detailed the events of the planned gun exchange and the fatal shooting. Anthony Guerrero, from Brooklyn Park, was subsequently charged with second-degree unintentional murder and illegal weapons possession. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office successfully petitioned for Guerrero to be tried as an adult. The 14-year-old was also charged as an accomplice, though his case remained in the juvenile court system and was not made public due to his age.
