On December 12, 2023, a fatal shooting occurred at Camp Nenookaasi, a homeless encampment in Minneapolis. The victim, 45-year-old Tyrone Joseph Mohr, was found inside a tent with multiple gunshot wounds around 5:15 p.m. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Authorities arrested a suspect near the encampment shortly after the incident.
The Hennepin County Attorney's Office later determined that the shooting was in self-defense, stating that Mohr had initiated a fight, attacked the shooter, and aimed a gun at him. Consequently, no charges were filed against the shooter.
The encampment, located near East 23rd Street and South 13th Avenue, had been scheduled for eviction on December 14, 2023, due to ongoing public safety and health concerns. Following the shooting, city officials postponed the eviction to December 19, 2023, to provide more time for residents to secure housing.
