In the quiet city of Lancaster, South Carolina, a late Saturday night turned tragic, forever altering the lives of two families. On December 5, 2015, Joshua 'Flint' McManus, a 40-year-old man, was fatally shot. Remembered as a devoted father and an outgoing individual with many friends, his sudden death sent ripples of shock through the community. He was an avid fan of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and enjoyed fishing with his loved ones.
The events of that night unfolded at
a home on Branch Street. Just before midnight, both the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office and Lancaster city police were dispatched to the residence after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they established a perimeter and ordered the occupant, Michael Brent Gay, then 32, to come outside. Gay was detained at the scene without incident. Inside the home, officers discovered McManus with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Michael Brent Gay was arrested and charged with the murder of Joshua Flint McManus. Investigators began interviewing additional witnesses and examining evidence to piece together the moments that led to the fatal shooting. It was later revealed that the two men were acquaintances and had been involved in an argument before the shooting occurred. Neighbors in the area, who considered their street to be quiet and safe, were stunned by the violence. For three years, Michael Brent Gay maintained his innocence and awaited trial for murder. However, after the prosecution presented its case over two days, Gay chose to plead guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. By admitting he was the killer, he avoided a potential life sentence. In December 2018, Gay, then 35, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, the maximum penalty for voluntary manslaughter in South Carolina. He was given credit for the 315 days he had already served in jail following his arrest.
