In the late afternoon of August 15, 2018, in Lancaster, South Carolina, the life of 34-year-old Demarcus Laquan Hendrix was tragically cut short. Responders were called to a residence on Hood Park Lane around 5:30 p.m., where they discovered Hendrix in the yard, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Springs Memorial Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 24-year-old Zakee Antwon
Edward Davis. Authorities believe that Hendrix and Davis, along with others, were at the Hood Park Lane home when a dispute erupted. The source of the conflict was reportedly a 'running disagreement concerning the sale of a firearm.' The argument escalated, leading to Davis allegedly shooting Hendrix multiple times. Following the shooting, Davis reportedly fled the scene in the black Jeep Cherokee that Hendrix had driven to the location.
Later that evening, law enforcement located the abandoned Jeep in a driveway on Clyburn Street, not far from Davis's own home on Riley Circle. A K-9 unit was able to track a scent from the vehicle to Davis's residence, but he was not there. Investigators soon learned that Davis had relatives in the Washington, D.C., area and had likely fled there.
Working with the U.S. Marshals Service, Lancaster County investigators were able to locate Davis in Washington, D.C. He was taken into custody and, after appearing before a judge, waived extradition. Davis was transported back to South Carolina and booked into the Lancaster County Detention Center in the early morning hours of August 23, 2018, where he was charged with the murder of Demarcus Hendrix. At the time of his arrest, Sheriff Barry Faile stated that the investigation was ongoing, as authorities were still searching for evidence and interviewing other individuals connected to the case.
